Providing a common language for leadership
Leadership ‘wheel’ enables leaders to talk about, set expectations for and measure leadership effectively.
The Challenge
We were initially engaged by a major global engineering, construction, building and maintenance contractor to review their leadership and leadership development practices. They had identified leadership as a ‘strategic initiative’ for their people to navigate their increasingly dynamic and complex business environment.
Our Approach
We conducted a robust discovery exercise, interviewing senior leaders from different locations globally about leadership strategy, leadership development initiatives and talent management. We prepared and tabled a report of our findings and recommendations to our client many of which were adopted. We collaborated with the CEO, Executive team, Head of HR and Senior Leaders over 12 months to develop a leadership capability framework describing great leadership behaviours, leadership pathways and success profiles for four leadership levels. This initiative was rolled out globally through a detailed communications campaign which we developed (printed booklet, briefing packs for managers, CEO video and updated intranet content).
The Impact
This ‘wheel’ as the leadership capability framework has become known, has been embraced by leaders globally and helped them talk about, set expectations for and measure leadership more effectively. Not only has it set the foundation against which all development activities can be aligned, it also provides a common language for leadership across the organisation and ensures better quality learning and development investment decisions.
